Lou
Things with Scott were⦠perfection.
I would never have used that word out loud to someone, but in the safety of my own mind I could admit to it. It had been two months since our first proper night togetherâI wasnât counting that disastrous first attempt at a dateâand I was floating on cloud nine.
Scott still treated me as romantically as he had that first proper date that weâd had, but sprinkled in between the romantic adult dates were the times I spent with him and with Pete. That kid was the sweetest, most adorable thing Iâd ever met. I was just as enamored with the son as I was with the father. Pete loved animals and nature, loved telling me facts and even let me read to him a few times. I felt honored.
Despite our talk about keeping things slow, we were spending a lot of time together. I wanted to ask Scott if this meant he was serious about us, and if I could tell my parents about our relationship, but I didnât want to push. He was the one with a son, after all. Scott hadnât said anything on that front, but I was aware he hadnât told Pete that we were dating, and I didnât think he had ever introduced a girlfriend to Pete before. I didnât want to push too far and ruin things when they were going so well.
Too well, in fact. I shouldâve known that something would come along and throw a wrench into the works. The wrench being my observant mother.
I was having breakfast at home with her, enjoying my fried eggs on toast, when she sprung it on me.
âSo,â Mom set her book down, âwho are you seeing?â
I nearly choked on my eggs. âWhat?â
Mom fixed me with a knowing look. âLou. You canât think Iâm that dumb. I know that youâre seeing someone. Is itâ¦â She paused. âDexter?â
âNo!â I blurted out.
âBecause if it is, I understand why you would be wary of letting us know, after you went back and forth so muchâ¦â
âIâm not seeing Dexter, trust me, Mom, we are done.â I kept my voice firm but gentle. I didnât want her to think I was angry with her, but I wanted her to know that Dexter was firmly in the past.
Mom nodded and looked pleased. âIâm glad. I mean⦠if he had made you happy then of course thatâs all I would have cared about. But if he didnât⦠if you had doubts⦠then Iâm glad youâre moving on.â
âThanks, Mom.â
She smiled and then grew serious again. âBut Iâm serious, honey, I know youâre seeing someone. Youâve been going out all the time and I know itâs not just with your friends. Youâve been smiling all the time, daydreaming, constantly cheerfulâI havenât seen you like this since you were in high school and had crushes on boys. Dexter certainly never made you act like this. Probably a sign I shouldâve realized he wasnât good enough for you⦠but no matter! The point is, I know you, and I know youâve got a man.
